A resume is a brief account of your relevant educational and employment history. It needs to be easy to read & written to inform a prospective employer about your:

  • Skills & Abilities
  • Experience & Achievements
  • Education & Knowledge
  • Willingness to learn and participate

It needs to be rewritten for each new job you are applying for.

Start by writing down all your work and education history. From this information, pull out for each new job, the information that is relevant to the job you are applying for and save it as a new resume for that job. If you do not have information to put in under a heading, you may need to consider upgrading your skills with further training and education. Volunteer programmes may also help to bridge any gaps you identify in your resume. Display this information with the most recent and relevant work or studies first. Work backwards. Your resume should also be written in the language of the industry. If you are not already familiar with this, you may need to research the industry or job further.

  • Who you are and your contact details
  • Knowledge / Skills and Experience
  • Educational background (work backwards from the most recent)

If relevant

  • Professional qualification
  • Professional Development
  • Employment history: Current & previous employment history (work backwards from the most recent)

Highlight your achievements and how they relates to your application for the job.

Pay special attention to the formatting. This includes the headings, font, size, grammar, tabs & margins & overall presentation. Have someone proofread it.

  • Age or Date of Birth
  • Religion or Culture
  • Number of dependants or marital status
  • Statement of health or photograph

When checking other websites for further samples, research, tips & advice, ensure that you use Australian websites for cultural relevancy. Links to Seek, and My Career sites could be a good place to start. The list is endless and only limited by your ability to use the computer and time.
